Pre-writing skills are the fundamental skills children need to develop before they are able to write. These skills contribute to a child's ability to hold and use a pencil, and the ability to draw, write, copy, and colour. A major component of pre-writing skills are the pre-writing shapes. These are the pencil strokes that most letters, numbers and early drawings are comprised of. They are typically mastered in sequential order, and to an age specific level. These strokes include the following strokes: l, -, O, +, /, ?, \, X, and ?.
Pre-writing Skills are essential for a child to be able to develop the ability to hold and move a pencil fluently and effectively and therefore produce legible writing.
In nursery we had numerous activities to support children for example we had table painting for children to mark make and explore the movements in the paint, we had our LIPs story book 'Were going on a bear hunt' and on the IWB for children to listen to, we had fine motor skills using pom poms and tweezers for children to practice finger isolation techniques, we had our write dance movements to music to develop gross motor skills and support muscle strengthening, we had dough gym where children manipulate the dough using different movements, we had ball rolling and chalk drawing outside and we had a story board activity where children were able to use pictures to make up their own story.
